The Big Mac, arguably McDonald’s most iconic burger, has seen a substantial price increase. In some locations, the cost of a Big Mac has risen by up to 143.6%. This means that in areas where the Big Mac previously cost $3.99 in 2014, it now costs $9.72 in 2024. The price hike can be attributed to several factors. The price of beef, a primary component of the Big Mac, has surged due to supply chain disruptions and higher feed costs.

The most recent Consumer Price Index report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that beef prices have increased by 7.7% since January 2023. Also, McDonald’s has raised wages to attract and retain workers amid a labor shortage, contributing to higher operational costs.

Like the Big Mac, the cost of beef has been a major contributor. USDA reports that wholesale beef prices have risen by 15% in 2023. The price of dairy products, including cheese, has also increased.

Chicken McNuggets

Chicken McNuggets, a favorite among both children and adults, have not been immune to the price hikes. The cost of a 10-piece Chicken McNuggets meal has gone up, reaching $9.19. The price increase can be attributed to several factors: ongoing supply chain disruptions have made it more challenging and expensive to source chicken; the cost of feed for chickens has risen, driving up overall production costs; and McDonald’s has had to increase wages to attract and retain employees, contributing to the higher price of menu items.

Filet-O-Fish

A Filet-O-Fish that used to cost $3.49 in 2019 now costs $5.49 in 2024. The cost of fish, especially sustainably sourced varieties used by McDonald’s, has been on the rise. Additional factors contributing to the price increase include McDonald’s commitment to sourcing sustainable fish, which has led to higher costs; the prices of other ingredients, such as tartar sauce and cheese, have also risen; and increased costs for packaging and transportation have further contributed to the overall price hike.

French Fries

Adverse weather conditions and supply chain disruptions have driven up the price of potatoes. Increased costs for labor, packaging, and transportation have also played a significant role in the price hike.
